Darcy and Bingley and Bennet had actually also had reasonable success at the pub. They had found that Paulie had been at the pub most every night the past week until his death. The local news was now so exciting that he apparently did not want to miss any of it.

However, since the pub was filled to the maximum all those same nights, no one, including the barman, the waiters or the owner, had the least idea who was talking to whom.

When Bingley and Darcy and Bennet came out of the pub, they were delighted to see the ladies waiting for them.

“Let’s go have dinner at The Last Blue Pig,” Jane suggested. “We have a whole new round of questions that lead to new avenues of queries.”

Oh!” their father exclaimed. “Where have you been since I last saw you an hour or so ago – to the moon and back?” He slapped his leg and laughed.

Knowing the owner of The Last Blue Pig well, Bennet and Phillips secured a table in a very private corner of the dining room.

“Well?” Bingley said, eager to hear the newest revelations.

“Tell us,” Darcy added, more specifically.

“We now have three possible scenarios,” Jane began, “one murderer, but more likely two or possibly three.’

“What!” Bennet, Darcy, Bingley and Aunt Phillips exclaimed in unison.

“Yes,” Elizabeth began. “We will explain our possibilities and get your reactions. However, whatever those may be we require lots of investigators.”

Phillips assisted Jane and Elizabeth in their denouement. Over wine and salad and then continuing into dinner, the three laid out three or more potential scenarios.

“What do you three think, having delved into pub gossip?” Phillips asked the three gentlemen.

“I think you have some valid lines of inquiry,” Darcy said. “However, after hearing your explanation, I now doubt that there is one murderer. Perhaps someone, even an elegant someone, came to steal a valuable equine, probably to enhance his stable in Europe. He accidentally killed Billy, while meaning to only stun him in order to subdue him while he rode away.” After pausing, Darcy added, “The gentleman, I presume this is not a lady rider, then saddled the thoroughbred and raced her away, leaving his own mount.”

“A dangerous act,” Bingley inserted.

“True,” Darcy agreed, “because we may still identify the owner of that stallion. He is a very fine young man.”

“He will say that the stallion was stolen,” Bingley said.

“He will and in fact that is a possibility,” Darcy responded.

“Oh?”

“Think about it a moment. If you, a very famous horseman, were determined to steal an Oaks winner, would you ride one of your own thoroughbreds to do the deed?”

“Hmm,” Bennet murmured, “more and more obscurity.”

“If I were someone of the caliber I am intimating in the horse world – and remember this is total surmise and only one of many possibilities as to the murder and theft – I would never take a chance that I could be identified by one of my own stock if something went wrong,” Darcy elaborated.

“Good point, Darcy,” Bingley said.
